Joint IMBER/SOLAS Carbon Research
Working Group

What is the "Carbon Research" Working Group?

An Ocean Carbon working group (formed jointly with SOLAS) is working toward seamless implementation of ocean carbon research in SOLAS and IMBER. Two major scientific emphases have been identified: (i) carbon inventories, fluxes and transports, and (ii) sensitivities of carbon-relevant processes to changes occurring in the ocean. After development of the implementation plan the group works to encourage the development of requisite research activities at national and international levels.

This group officially formed on Sept. 28th 2005 during the 7th International CO2 Conference in Broomfield, Colorado, (USA). The group, which is co-chaired by Truls Johannessen (Norway) and Arne Körtzinger (Germany) works jointly with IOCCP.
The implementation group finalized a joint SOLAS/IMBER CarbonResearch implementation plan in 2007.

  • SubGroup 1 - Surface Ocean System (Chair: N. Metzl, France)
This group is focusing on synthesis, instrumentation and technology development, VOS and mixed layer sampling strategy.

  • SubGroup 2- Interior ocean carbon storage (Chair: N. Gruber, USA)
This group is covering inventory and observations, natural variability, transformation, designing a strategy for leverage for the ARGO program, and interaction with modeling.

  • SubGroup 3- Ocean Acidification
This group will coordinate international research efforts in ocean acidification and undertake synthesis activities in ocean acidification at the international level.
