Joint IMBER/SOLAS Carbon Research Working Group
|
 |
What is the "Carbon Research" Working Group?
An Ocean Carbon working group (formed jointly with SOLAS) is working toward seamless implementation of ocean carbon research in SOLAS and IMBER. Two major scientific emphases have been identified: (i) carbon inventories, fluxes and transports, and (ii) sensitivities of carbon-relevant processes to changes occurring in the ocean. After development of the implementation plan the group will work to encourage the development of requisite research activities at national and international levels. This group will work in coordination with IOCCP.

SubGroup 1 - Surface ocean CO2 fluxes (Chair: N. Metzl, France)
This group will focus on synthesis, instrumentation and technology development, VOS and mixed layer sampling strategy. Jointly with IOCCP, this group is starting to plan a workshop on VOS network design and data synthesis to be tentatively held in late 2006 or early 2007.

SubGroup 2- Interior ocean carbon storage (Chair: N. Gruber, USA)
This group will cover inventory and observations, natural variability, transformation, designing a strategy for leverage for the ARGO program, and interaction with modeling.

-
SubGroup 3- Carbon cycle climate sensitivities and feedbacks (chair: K. Lee, Korea)
This group will focus on the response of ecosystems and biogeochemical cycle to natural and anthropogenic changes, feedbacks to Earth System, and future perspective (prediction). Email discussion has been initiated between this group and IOCCP to identify the science issues and develop guidelines and protocols for mesocoms experiments. Visit the "Sub Group 3 " Page
