What is new?

!!! 16-17 June 08: SOCAT Meeting (UNESCO, Paris, France)
Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) Project At the “Surface Ocean CO2 Variability and Vulnerability” workshop in April 2007, co-sponsored by IOCCP, SOLAS, IMBER, and the Global Carbon Project, participants agreed to establish a standard global surface CO2 data set that would bring together, in a common format, all publicly available surface CO2 data. Further information.

!!! March 08: New web site launched : CARBON-OPS website
CARBON-OPS is a UK project which aims to develop an automated supply chain of ocean surface and atmospheric carbon dioxide measurements from selected UK research ships to operational end-users.

March 08: The Sub-group on Surface Ocean System is preparing a Deep-Sea Research II special Issue. This volume will include 14 manuscripts contributed by the Surface Ocean pCO2 Vulnerability and Variability Workshop that was held in Paris, on April 11-14, 2007. Guest editors of this volume are Nicolas Metzl, Bronte Tilbrook, Corinne Lequéré, Dorothee Bakker, Richard Feely, Scott Doney and Sylvie Roy. Publication is planned for the fall of 2008.

At the “Surface Ocean CO2 Variability and Vulnerability” workshop in April 2007, participants agreed to establish a standard global surface CO2 data set that would bring together, in a common format, all publicly available surface CO2 data.  This data set will serve as a foundation upon which the community will continue to build in the future, based on agreed data and metadata formats and quality-control procedures. In December, a small group met to agree on 1st level Quality Control procedures, and it was agreed that the IOCCP and the SIC group should organize a small workshop to develop the 2nd level QC procedures and to discuss the coordination of regional scientific groups. This  “Surface Ocean CO2 ATlas” project (SOCAT) workshop will scheduled for 16-17 June, in Paris, and UNESCO headquarters.  The meeting will be chaired by Dorothee Bakker.

Nicolas Gruber from the Sub-Group on Interior Ocean submitted a proposal to organise a scientific conference on “DECADAL VARIATIONS OF THE OCEAN’S INTERIOR CARBON CYCLE: SYNTHESIS AND VULNERABILITIES” at the “Centro Stefano Franscini” in “Monte Veritā, Switzerland in 2009. Preliminary plan is to have plenary talks, a poster session, and working groups over 4 days.

A SIC! Group meeting is being planned for October 2008, in conjunction with the Ocean in High CO2 Symposium to be held in Monaco on October 6-8th, 2008.
