The course aims to introduce students to the theme of global climate changes in the Mediterranean Sea and with particular emphasis to coralline algae, and bryozoans, biomineralizers from the Gulf of La Spezia. The course will held in the Regional Natural Park of Porto Venere (La Spezia, Italy) and it will be based on seminars and fieldwork activities. Students will be based on Palmaria Island for 10 days, where they will perform field work activities and attend seminars. Two-day visit at the ENEA Laboratory will be organized for showing to the students the experimental activities are conducted on taxa from the area under controlled conditions.

Seminars will focus on  the effects of climate changes on Mediterranean bioconstructors, with an introduction on Mediterranean marine chemistry, overview about the effects of acidification on Mediterranean biota and a special focus will be given coralline algae and bryozoans as model organisms in climate change studies.

Students will be trained on non-invasive sampling technique (visual census), methodologies and instruments for in field monitoring activities. Also, they will be encouraged to develop two research projects on few selected organisms and contribute in long term monitoring programme on bioconstructor  of the  Gulf  that For-Mare and  ENEA are conducing  on  Palmaria Island (Regional Natural Park of Porto Venere, Gulf of La Spezia). Science cafès and discussion groups will be also important parts of the training. 24 hours will be dedicated to fieldwork using non-invasive techniques for studying abundance and distributions of marine calcifying organism colonizing the intertidal zone; 34 hours will be dedicated to seminars and laboratory activities; 10 hours will be dedicated to data analyses and student elaborations; 10 hours to didactic activities such as discussion groups and Science cafès.

The course is organized by Environmental Research Centre ENEA of La Spezia and University of Portsmouth with the support of Association For-Mare  -a  non profit Association in Applied Ecological Sciences which promotes didactic and research projects in Biology, Ecology and Natural  Sciences. This is an Expert Training course for MARES Doctoral students.
