New linked project
EPOCA: The European Project on Ocean Acidification (EPOCA) will be launched on 10 June 2008. Its goal is to document ocean acidification, investigate its impact on biological processes, predict its consequences over the next 100 years, and advise policy-makers on potential thresholds or tipping points that should not be exceeded.
For more information and a full list of all EPOCA partners visit: http://epoca-project.eu
Kickoff meeting: EPOCA will officially be launched during a kickoff meeting in Nice (France), 10-13 June 2008.

News from our sponsors
The 4th IGBP Congress was held in Cape Town, South Africa on 5-9 May 2008. About 380 delegates from 65 countries attended the event and contributed to the development of IGBP’s scientific agenda for the period 2008-2013, with a focus on how IGBP can better contribute to sustainable solutions including mitigation, innovation and adaptation. The Congress resulted in “The Cape Town Declaration on Science for Environmental Sustainability” which outlined an enhanced plan of international collaboration to pursue science that will help achieve sustainable development of common, global resources. http://igbp2008.co.za/index.php?id=1

GEOTRACES intrecalibration cruise
GEOTRACES is organizing a cruise from June 8 to July 12, 2008 to collect intercalibration water and particle samples. This intercalibration exercise aims to provide reference materials that can be distributed to the international community and reference profiles of Trace Elements and their Isotopes to ensure compatibility and consistency of GEOTRACES data. The cruise will be separated into two legs with the first focusing on the collection of seawater reference material and the second on particles. The R/V Knorr will depart Norfolk, Virginia USA and transect to the BATS station southeast of Bermuda where the bulk of sampling will occur. Scientific crew change for the second leg will be in Bermuda on June 27 and particle sampling will begin at BATS will sampling underway on the return to Norfolk on July 12. If you are interested in participating to this exercise, note that selected samples for intercalibration will also be available after the cruise. For general information about the intercalibration please contact Greg Cutter <gcutter@odu.edu>. To inquire about availability of archived 0.5-liter samples of filtered and acidified seawater for trace metal intercalibration, contact Ken Bruland <bruland@ucsc.edu>. For information about archived particulate samples, contact Rob Sherrell <sherrell@ahab.marine.rutgers.edu>. Note that these people are all currently aboard the intercalibration cruise, and may be unable to respond to inquiries until after the cruise is completed.
