IMBIZO is the Zulu word for ‘a gathering’, and every second year, we gather about 120 people for an IMBeR IMBIZO. IMBIZOs have a different format from other conferences, with three concurrent, but interacting workshops. They include oral and poster presentations to showcase the current state of knowledge in marine and human systems and their governance. This has been found to be a very effective format for stimulating discussion between interdisciplinary experts and also to provide linkages between biogeochemistry, ecosystem and social science research.
Discussion sessions of current knowledge help to identify key questions or hot topics to be addressed by the IMBeR research community.
