IMBER Meetings
IMBER Executive Committee meeting
The Executive Committee meeting was held in Miami on November 7-8, 2008. A joint session was also held with GLOBEC on November 8th.

First IMBER IMBIZO
The first IMBER IMBIZO held in Miami on November 9-13, 2008 was a great success!
One hundred and ten participants attended the meeting. The IMBIZO consisted of plenaries, topic workshops, joint poster sessions and reporting plenaries. The three workshops are planning to publish synthesis papers and regular contributions in a Deep-Sea research special issue. The workshops’ chairs and participants were also encouraged to identify products resulting from the work presented.

Call for IMBER IMBIZO II workshops topics
We have just finished the first very successful IMBER IMBIZO in Miami, and we are starting the planning for the IMBIZO II which will be held in about 18 months time in Europe. The theme of IMBIZO II will be "Integrating biogeochemistry and ecosystems in a changing ocean: Regional comparisons" As with IMBIZO I, there will be three concurrent interacting workshops. We are calling for topics for these workshops. The aim of each workshop will be to synthesise the current scientific knowledge of the topic and identify key scientific questions for future studies. Each workshop will be expected to produce scientific products such as synthesis papers and a special journal issue. If you would like to submit a workshop topic for consideration please send a short (2 paragraph) description of the topic to Elena Fily (Elena.Fily@univ-brest.fr) at the IMBER International Office by December 12th at the latest.

SOLAS/IMBER Carbon Working Group
The Sub-group on Surface Ocean System is preparing a Deep-Sea Research II special Issue. The issue contains 13 papers accepted with revisions contributed by the Surface Ocean pCO₂ Vulnerability and Variability Workshop that was held in Paris, on April 11-14, 2007. Guest editors are Nicolas Metzl, Bronte Tilbrook, Corinne Lequéré, Dorothee Bakker, Richard Feely, Scott Doney and Sylvie Roy. Publication is planned for early 2009. At the “Surface Ocean CO₂ Variability and Vulnerability” workshop in April 2007, participants agreed to establish a standard global surface CO₂ data set that would bring together, in a common format, all publicly available surface CO₂ data.

The 2008 SCOR General Meeting was held at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole Massachusetts from 22-24 October, where the SCOR representatives reviewed proposals for new working groups.  Two carbon-related working groups were approved:

Guide for Best Practices in Ocean Acidification Research and Data Reporting
The need for standardised protocols and reporting of data is crucial for meaningful comparisons and collaboration within the field of ocean acidification. EPOCA organised, together with IOCCP, OCB, and the Kiel Excellence Cluster ‘The Future Ocean’, an international research workshop on best practices for ocean acidification research (19-21 November 2008 in Kiel, Germany; chair: Ulf Riebesell). The development of the best practices guide is meant to be an open community-wide activity. We invite interested experts to visit the EPOCA web site (http://epoca-project.eu/ under "Best practices guide") to review the presentations from the meeting, the timeline for drafting and reviewing the guide, and contacts.

Opportunity for graduates to participate in hydrographic cruises run by the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton as a chemical oceanographer involved in measuring inorganic nutrients/titrating dissolved oxygen samples. The Ocean in a High CO₂ World-II Meeting Summary and Follow-up
