IMBER News

The GLOBEC-IMBER Transistion Task Team (TTT) was established in 2008 to recommend to SCOR and IGBP on how the second phase of the IMBER programme should proceed to accommodate new developments in marine ecosystem research that need addressing after the completion of the GLOBEC research programme at the end of 2009. The task team met in Reading, UK in July 2008 and again in Washingtom, DC, USA in December 2008. Read the article
A draft report of the TTT has now been compiled in response to the terms of reference given to the team by the programmes' sponsors. The report is now available for comment by the community. Please download the report and send any comments to the TTT chair, John Field (jgfieldUCT@gmail.com ) by 1 March 2009. http://www.imber.info/products/TTT_Report_Feb09.pdf

The International Antarctic Institute (IAI) is a global consortium of universities and agencies that provide university-level education and conduct research in Antarctica. The IAI offers international opportunities in Antarctic undergraduate and postgraduate multi-disciplinary education by sharing teaching resources between international partner universities. We are also developing new and innovative Antarctic courses and pathways between degrees to encourage student and staff mobility.

COST Action 735 offers financial support for students and post-docs in Europe for short-term scientific missions (STSMs) to qualifying European institutions for the purpose of training, development of collaborations and new techniques. Visit http://www.cost-735.org/science/STSM.html

Report from the OCB scoping workshop on ocean acidification: http://www.us-ocb.org/OCB_OA_rept.pdf

The Journal of Marine Education National Marine Educators Association, Volume 25, Number 1, 2009 special issue "Ocean Acidification-from Ecological Impacts to Policy Opportunities" - http://www.us-ocb.org/publications/CurrentFINAL.pdf

On 30 January 2009, the Monaco Declaration on Ocean Acidification was released, calling for urgent action to limit damages to marine ecosystems due to accelerating ocean acidification. The Declaration, signed by 155 experts who attended the October Symposium on the Ocean in a High-CO2 World, organised by IGBP, SCOR, IOC and IAEA, received wide media coverage. It draws on the Research Priorities Report on Ocean Acidification, which summarises the advances presented at the Symposium. Both are available from: www.ocean-acidification.net

The newest version of "Google Earth," contains a feature called "Ocean in Google Earth" that enables users to dive beneath the surface of the sea and explore the world's oceans. "Ocean in Google Earth" includes videos, photos, diagrams and texts that vividly illustrate glacial, geological and ocean processes influencing the behavior of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet in Antarctica.
